Rage Against the Machine

Filed under: Uncategorized — katie @ 11:21 am

I’ve been trying to blog for the last couple of days, but alas, technology has called off our truce. It’s true. There was a year in college when technology and I were at odds, but we called a truce and have been working amicably with each other ever since then. …At least, we had been until a couple of days ago…

I was peacefully surfing the internet one evening (through multiple windows, as is my wont) when the computer threw down its glove and announced an imminent shutdown. It counted down one minute’s time as I sat helpless and dumbfounded in Sarah’s gigantic desk chair. Determined to finish reading Cris’ blog, I hopped back onto the internet as soon as the computer rebooted. It shut down again, in the same manner as before. We went back and forth like this, locked in epic battle, for probably ten minutes or more before I suddenly had an idea and made a temporary retreat to the phone.
Armed with new intel from Dad, and having foraged in the jungle that is Andrew’s room to find his jump drive, I downloaded a fix for the dreaded Sasser worm off of the dining room computer and marched boldly back to my room for a showdown. I plunged the jump drive into the USB port of Sarah’s computer – a mighty blow, but alas, it was a wayward strike. The computer was not daunted; it mockingly threw up a window stating: The Sasser Worm has not been found on your computer. …I could hear it laughing, taunting me. But hope was not lost. At the next boot up, the evil demon box inadvertently revealed a weakness to me. It was its undoing.
In conferencing with my Dad once again, we discovered that our defenseless computer had indeed been infected by the Sasser worm, not B Sasser – the outlaw who had already been successfully defeated on the dining room computer, but E Sasser. Oh, he was a crafty one, but victory was within our grasp. That night Dad brought home the heavy artillery. A new file from Dad’s jump drive delivered E Sasser its death blow. 29 infected files were freed from the tyranny of Sasser! And there was much rejoicing. *yea*
But the war is not over. The computer retreated, but it is not defeated. Even now, it refuses to close the door to prevent further Sasser infiltration. But soon it will submit to us. It will download the file, and it will install it. The patch will be complete, and there will be peace again in the land of Sarah’s Computer. But hear me, hackers, and you viruses and worms who do their bidding! The eyes of Katie are vigilant, and she will not rest until she has mastered any technology that would come between her and her pursuit of leisure time! To be continued…?
